"Often referred to as a "green desert," the semiarid Dry Chaco is an exceptionally unique and fragile habitat harboring abundant biodiversity and cultures. Xerophytic forests of cacti, shrubs, and succulents flourish within its extreme environment. Undulating sand dunes, salt lagoons, and seasonal freshwater streams grace its sparse landscape. It is one of the last refuges for megafauna in the Americas and sustains populations of Giant Armadillo, Giant Anteater, Jaguar, Maned Wolf, Brazilian Tapir, and Chacoan Peccary, a species once thought to by scientists extinct. Diverse cultural groups, including Ayoreo and Guaraní Ñandeva communities, depend upon its ecosystems for well-being.
